Braganza
The Difford’s Guide and Beefeater Crown Jewel Gin Competition was held on the 14th June 2023 and this was my entry. The competition was to create a cocktail that would display the qualities of the gin, as well as commemorate the coronation of Charles III. Although the cocktail didn’t make it into the finals I’m still proud of this one and its concept.
Created at STERLING Bar in Manchester, the name originates from Catherine of Braganza, whom married Charles II. She introduced tea from Portugal to England popularising it as a sociable beverage to drink. The rubies featured on the Coronation Crown, as well as other parts of the regalia inspired the use of ruby port.
Charles II reinstated the Crown Jewels as part of the British Monarchy Restoration when he was coronated and they are the same that were used in the coronation of Charles III. The cocktail is a celebration of not only the coronation but also an acknowledgment of the history that came before. It is a long and refreshing serve, sweetened by Ruby Port with complexity and botanical elements from the Gin and Lady Grey Tea. The long Grapefruit Zest garnish not only adds a depth to the aroma but also highlights the addition of the botanical used in the Crown Jewel Gin.
